What is a planned gift?
A planned gift is a tax-effective way of giving that is usually given from your assets, not your current income. It is often the largest charitable donation people make and is tailored to each person’s financial situation. A planned gift of a bequest, life insurance, an RRSP/RIF, securities or an annuity are all ways in which you can leave a permanent legacy.
I would like to include Mount St. Mary Foundation in my will. What is the appropriate wording?
Mount St. Mary Foundation can provide general wording to help you in preparing your will. Contact:

Some people prefer not to speak directly with the Foundation about their intended bequest, but we encourage donors or their advisors to contact us to request information such as the existence of specific programs or the proper name of a project.
You may want to provide us with a copy of your will (or just the section of your will that has to do with your gift to Mount St. Mary Foundation). This will help ensure that your wishes are carried out when we receive the gift. Providing us with a copy does not in any way affect your ability to revise your will in the future, if you want to.
Your gift may serve as an inspiration for others to give.
Is my gift tax-deductible?
All charitable donations made to Mount St. Mary Foundation are eligible for tax receipts in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency guidelines. We are committed to forwarding tax receipts as soon as possible following receipt of the donation. The receipt value is based on the current fair market value of the gift.
What date will appear on the tax receipt of my estate gift?
If a person makes a charitable gift in that person’s will, the donation will be considered to have been made immediately before the death of the taxpayer. This means that the charitable donation receipt can be applied against income in the year of death (including any deemed capital gains arising from the deemed disposition of assets on death).
I don’t have the means to make a large gift. Do you accept more modest donations?
Mount St. Mary Foundation is extremely grateful for gifts of all sizes. Donors make decisions that are best for them, and every gift from every donor is valued for its thoughtfulness and generosity. Regardless of size, every gift changes the lives of our residents for the better.
What types of gifts do you accept?
Mount St. Mary Foundation accepts many different types of charitable gifts ranging from gifts of cash to gifts-in-kind. Click here for details on gift options.
If I designate my gift for a specific program, what happens to it if the program ceases to exist after you have received the funds?
If a gift cannot be used for the program designated by the donor, the funds may be used for other related purposes as approved by Mount St. Mary Foundation Board of Directors. The Board gives utmost consideration to the original wishes of the donor.
I have very specific ideas about how I would like my gift spent. Can you accommodate my wishes?
We encourage you to designate your gift to an area that is important to you and in keeping with Mount St. Mary Hospital’s mission and vision. Please contact us early on in the decision making process.
If your proposed designation isn’t possible because of Mount St. Mary Foundation’s Gift Acceptance Policy, we can suggest an alternative designation that closely matches your needs and interests.
I would like my gift to remain anonymous. Is this possible?
Some people prefer that their gift remains anonymous. We will respect and honour your request.
What happens if I tell Mount St. Mary Foundation about a bequest and then can’t follow through on the gift?
Circumstances can change throughout the course of your lifetime. We do not plan on the gift in a financial way. We understand that all charitable gifts must take into consideration your personal and family circumstances. When these change, so do your estate plans. We are grateful for your generous wishes, even if changed circumstances prevent you following through with the gift. Please keep in touch and let us know, as you update your will.
If Mount St. Mary Foundation isn’t going to receive my gift for a long time, why do they need to know now?
It is important for Mount St. Mary Foundation to receive information about your planned gift so we can keep records ensuring that your exact wishes are carried out when the gift is received. Knowing in advance of your intentions also lets us thank and recognize you during your lifetime and allows us the opportunity to let you know how your generosity will impact our residents. Sharing this information also provides a wonderful testimonial to encourage others to support Mount St. Mary Foundation in this way.
